ITV Pays $30M for Controlling Interest in ‘Hatfields’ Producer ThinkFactory
ITV is acquring a 65 percent controlling stake in Thinkfactory Media, producer of the Emmy award-winning "Hatfields & McCoys," for $30 million.
The British company will also have an option to buy the remaining 35 percent of the company, beginning three years from now. Thinkfactory joins ITV's growing number of U.S. production businesses, including Gurney Productions and High Noon Entertainment.
Thinkfactory was founded in 1992 by producer Leslie Greif, and creates such reality shows as "R&B Divas," "Preachers' Daughters," "Marriage Bootcamp: Bridezillas" and "The Hook-Up." It also produces dramas including "Texas Rangers" and last year's "Hatfields & McCoys" for History, as well as "Hit Men" for Spike and "Whitey" for A+E Networks.
"We're gathering real momentum in building a substantial US presence, which is central to our strategy of creating a strong international content business," said ITV chief executive Adam Crozier. "The acquisition of Thinkfactory Media is clearly a further significant step forward in achieving that goal."
Added Greif: "We are thrilled to team up with Paul Buccieri and ITV, one of the world's most respected names in television. While retaining the independent spirit that keeps Thinkfactory Media creative, this relationship not only allows us to continue producing top-quality scripted and unscripted content, but enhances the potential for global distribution and our continued success in the marketplace."
James Franco Disses ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ (Again), Says It’s All About the Benjamins
Multi-hyphenate James Franco has more jobs (and hobbies) then one can count, but it's his latest piece of work that's buzzing around the web.
Franco wrote a critical take about "Man of Steel" for Vice, but much of the attention on the piece is actually based on what he said about Spider-Man, not Superman.
Franco, who attended the "Man of Steel" premiere incognito because he believes Henry Cavill does not like him based on their history filming "Tristan and Isolde," says he really enjoyed "Man of Steel." But that's perhaps the least interesting part of the Vice article.
In the piece, Franco jumped right into taking shots at "The Amazing Spider-Man" movies, which are essentially a quick reboot of his own "Spider-Man" trilogy with Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi.
Franco distinguishes between the old and new versions by calling the current series one that "arose even before there was time to bury the corpse of the old one and enshroud it in the haze of nostalgia."

He writes, "I don't have a huge emotional attachment to the Spider-Man franchise as a subject, my biggest sentimental ties are to the people I worked with on those films: Sam, Toby, Kirsten (Dunst), the late and great Laura Ziskin, and the hundreds of others who worked with us. I don't really feel much distress over its being remade, for many reasons, but what is interesting to me is that it has been remade so quickly—and the reasons why."
The reason? "The answer is, of course, money. We are in the film business, and the studios are owned by large corporations who want to make money."
And make money the film certainly did. Marvel recently announced third and fourth installments of "The Amazing Spider-Man."
Not being a fan of the remake is not new for Franco. In an interview with MTV News earlier this year, the actor referred to "The Amazing Spider-Man" as being, "Eh."
"I mean, they could have strayed a little bit more from the original," Franco said. "It's like, 'Why?' Well, I guess they made a lot of money. Congrats. Good for them. Sam and I moved on, we made 'Oz.'
Ratings: ABC Wins With NBA Finals, ‘Voice’ Finale Steady With Spring, Down From Fall
NBC's "The Voice" season finale matched the ratings for last spring's finale, but was down from December's finale, according to preliminary numbers. ABC won the night, thanks to Game 6 of the NBA Finals, according to preliminary numbers.
Though ABC's numbers are approximate due to the nature of live sports, the network currently holds first place in the advertiser-sought 18-49 demographic with a 5.4 rating/14 share and second in total viewers with 13.7 million. Game 6 of the NBA Finals drew a 6.5/18, down 24 percent from the early numbers on last year's Game 6 but still the best ratings for the night, and was the most-watched show of the evening with 16.1 million total viewers.

Prior to the game, ABC aired "Jimmy Kimmel Live Game Night," which had a 2.6/9 with 7.6 million total viewers; and the pre-game show, which took a 3.8/12 and drew 10 million total viewers.
NBC was second in ratings but first in total viewers with a 3.8/11 and 14 million. Facing the NBA Finals in many parts of the country, the season finale of "The Voice" at 9 p.m. drew a 4.3/12 -- even with last May's finale, but down 12 percent from the fall season finale -- and had 15.3 million total viewers, 3.4 million more than the May finale and the largest total viewership for a "Voice" finale in the show's history.
"America's Got Talent" at 8 was even with last Tuesday for a 2.2/9 and had 11.4 million total viewers.
Univision was third in ratings and fifth in total viewers with a 1.5/4 and 3.7 million.
Fox took fourth place in ratings and total viewers with a 1.4/4 and 3.9 million. The network aired "So You Think You Can Dance" throughout its primetime slate, which was down 18 percent in the demo compared to last week.
CBS, which aired repeats throughout the night, was fifth in ratings and third in total viewers with a 0.9/3 and 6.4 million.
Universal Rescues ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ With Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels
Universal Pictures and Red Granite have rescued the Farrelly brothers' sequel "Dumb and Dumber To" out of turnaround from Warner Bros. and New Line.
Red Granite will finance the $35 million comedy and handle foreign sales, while Universal will distribute in the U.S..
"Dumb and Dumber" stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will return to reprise their roles as dim-witted best friends Lloyd and Harry, respectively.

Broadway Box Office Up 6% After Tony Awards
Broadway's biggest night provided a nice lift to the box office as overall ticket sales jumped more than 6 percent after the Tony Awards.
Cash registers rang out along the Great White Way to the tune of $24.8 million as ticketbuyers rushed to catch the big award winners, according to numbers released by the Broadway League. The average gross for a show increased from $898,524 to $952,699.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of the awards love was Best Play winner "Vanya and Sasha and Masha and Spike." Its weekly box office jumped more than 18 percent to $654,304.
The box office take for Best Musical victor "Kinky Boots" increased 4 percent last week to $1.47 million, while Best Revival of a Musical winner "Pippin" enjoyed an 8 percent boost to more than $1 million.
Best Revival of a Play winner "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" closed last spring, so it wasn't able to cash in.
Even some of the shows that came up short on Tonys night -- like "Matilda" and "Annie" -- got a bump from the prime time exposure.
"Matilda" rose 4 percent to $1.2 million, and "Annie" climbed 7 percent to $962,027. "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella" got a massive 19 percent goosing to $1.1 million.
Ratings for the Neil Patrick Harris hosted telecast were also up more than 20 percent, representing the largest numbers for the Tony Awards since 2009.

Rachel Maddow Calls Journalist Michael Hastings ‘Angry,’ ‘Loving,’ and ‘Fearless’ (Video)
Rachel Maddow paid tribute during her MSNBC show Tuesday to journalist Michael Hastings, who died earlier that day at just 33 years old.
In the segment, Maddow discussed Hastings' work, from his famous June 2010 Rolling Stone profile of Stanley McChrystal, to his books, including "I Lost My Love In Baghdad," a deeply personal narrative about his then-girlfriend's murder in Iraq.
Maddow also spoke about Hastings as a friend.
She said, "Michael Hastings did not write to make friends, but if you were his friend, he was an inspiring and exciting and original and deeply loveable guy."

Maddow beautifully described Hastings, who wrote for BuzzFeed as well as other publications, as a fearless reporter, and as a person.
"Michael was angry. He was also loving, and thoughtful, and constructive, and brilliant, but he was angry about things that weren't right in the world," she said. "He was angry with things that weren't right in the world, and with war, and with loss, and that drove his reporting and it made him fearless when he realized he had found something important that he could report. A lot of people in the news business want to seem unafraid. Michael Hastings was actually unafraid."
Hastings died in a car crash in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.

Hot Short Film: ‘Tonight I Strike’
EXCLUSIVE: After getting his start doing VFX work on projects including District 9 and The Watchmen, Canadian filmmaker Dan Gaud has his eye on directing. Here is a look at his calling card, Tonight I Strike, is a $15,000 futuristic short with about 60 VFX shots that he executed on a laptop computer in a short he shot in seven days. The money was raised by his manager, Jewerl Ross, who signed Gaud off another short that he had made for $500. Gaud’s hope from this short is to sign with an agency and either make a feature that is set in the world this short presents, or maybe the plethora of no budget features that producers like Jason Blum are minting money with as counter-programming to the big budgeters. What do you think?

Jimmy Kimmel Wants ‘To Channing All Over Your Tatum,’ Whatever That Means (Video)
"White House Down" stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel for the official video to the song "(I Wanna) Channing All Over Your Tatum." The actors had performed lyrics from the song during Kimmel's post-Oscar special this past year.
The wacky music video is chock full of confusing lines, flying and Olivia Munn singing into a leaf blower -- and if that's not enough Kimmel even breaks his own rules and raps along the actors this time. (Step aside, Lonely Island!). The music video also stars Gabourey Sidibe and Miley Cyrus.

In the video, Kimmel is confused about what the song means, and some "rapping" by the title character doesn't quite clear it up for the talk show host. Evidently, "going Channing on the Tatum makes the babies be born."
No, this isn't a weird dream. This is the video:
‘The Voice’ Wraps Season 4, Crowns New Winner (Video)
NBC's "The Voice" crowned its Season 4 winner on Tuesday's finale.
Note: Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched Tuesday's finale.
Giving Team Blake Shelton its third win of the talent show's run, Danielle Bradbery won America's hearts in a combination of votes and iTunes downloads to snag the season's top spot.
The Texas native was speechless once she heard her name announced as the winner and was unable to finish performing her victory song, Sara Evans' "Born To Fly," which she performed to much praise on Monday's episode. At 16 years old, Bradbery is the youngest winner of the NBC competition's run.
Also read: As Music-Competition Shows Slide, What Does It Take to Make a Hit?
Bradbery beat out a couple tough finalists for the coveted win: Fellow Team Blake act, The Swon Brothers, and Team Usher's pop rocker, Michelle Chamuel.
A parade of stars performed on "The Voice" stage during the two-hour preamble to the winner's announcement.
Cher performed her newest single, "Woman's World," off her upcoming album. And after taking the season off from coaching, a slimmed down Christina Aguilera performed with Pitbull on their single, "Feel This Moment"; Country act Florida Georgia Line and rapper Nelly performed "Cruise"; and Bruno Mars staged a big band throwback with "Treasure."
Aside from group performances with returning contenders, the finalists got the chance to duet with guest star performers: Bradbery with Hunter Hayes, The Swon Brothers with Bob Seger and Chamuel with OneRepublic.

Bradbery's season will go down as one of the show's most memorable. It took the risk of replacing Aguilera and Cee Lo Green with Usher and Shakira and it paid off. Viewers accepted the new coaches very quickly and the show held on to its ratings numbers compared to its previous season.
In May, TheWrap was the first to report that Aguilera and Green are returning for Season 5. Soon after, NBC announced that Shakira and Usher would return for its sixth season.
Most notably, this season held on to its viewers while Fox's "American Idol" saw a more than 20 percent drop in its Season 12 ratings followed by the departures of judges Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.
Also read: Ratings: 'The Voice' Good News/Bad News: Up From Last Week, Down From Previous Performance Finales
The departure of longtime reality chief Mike Darnell would signal unrest for "Idol." Big changes are going down at the rival talent show as TheWrap reported first that Fox had fired founding executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick.
Fox would then place David Hill, a seasoned executive at its parent company News Corp., in charge of overseeing "Idol" and "The X Factor." That was followed by the hiring of Swedish "Idol" producer Per Blankens as "Idol's" showrunner.
When we asked "Voice" producer Mark Burnett why "The Voice" continued to thrive with viewers while "Idol" was faltering, he said "The audience had gravitated toward 'The Voice' mainly because it's a kinder show. There's no humiliation on it. I feel that that's very, very important with audiences."
Watch the moment in which Bradbery is named the winner below:
UK Regulator To Probe BSkyB Over Withholding Claim Lodged By Rival BT
The battle between BT and BSkyB continues to mount with UK regulator Ofcom opening an investigation into the News Corp.-controlled pay-TV group on the back of a complaint brought by BT. In the claim, which BT filed in late May, the group alleges that BSkyB has engaged in an abuse of dominant position by withholding its sports channels from BT’s YouView platform unless BT supplies its own sports channels to Sky for retail on Sky’s platform.

RATINGS RAT RACE: Game 6 Of NBA Finals Among Highest-Rated Ever On ABC

It was great news all around for ABC last night. First, the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs staged an overtime thriller that scored a 14.7 overnight rating, up 29% from Game 5, the second highest-rated NBA Finals Game 6 ever on ABC and the fourth highest rated game ever on the network. Secondly, Miami Heat prevailed, forcing a Game 7. The Heat-Spurs heroics likely pushed the finale of NBC’s The Voice down. MORE
