Hotspot Shield Crosses 10M Installations On Android And iOS, Showing Strong Appetite For Mobile VPN
Virtual private networking is a great way to accomplish a number of things, including making sure that your secrets stay your own, protecting against malware attacks, and getting around the geoblocking of audio and video content from networks, labels and basically anyone who wants to restrict your sweet, sweet access. It's understandable, then, that as computing increasingly goes mobile, VPN would get more popular on mobile, too.

Cannes: Weinstein Co Acquires Keanu-Reese Sci-Fi Pic ‘Passengers’ In Splashy Deal

EXCLUSIVE: The Weinstein Company has won the bidding for the Keanu Reeves-Reese Witherspoon sci-fi romance movie Passengers. I’m hearing the distributor has committed to a multi-million dollar minimum guarantee and a P&A commitment in the $25 million range for a wide release in 2014. I understand FilmDistrict and Open Road were in the mix here in Cannes for the project, which was written by Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts and will be directed by Game Of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire helmer Brian Kirk in his major feature film debut. Wayfare Entertainment is
financing and producing the pic. The plot: A spacecraft transporting thousands of people to a distant colony planet has a malfunction in one of its sleep chambers. As a result, a single passenger (Reeves) is awakened 90 years before anyone else. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he eventually decides to wake up a second passenger (Witherspoon), marking the beginning of what becomes a unique love story. The script was developed by Stephen Hamel and Reeves at their production shingle Company Films. Hamel is producing with Wayfare CEO Ben Browning. Start Media’s ... Read More »
Ratings: ‘Rules of Engagement’ Finale Down; ‘Goodwin Games,’ ‘Motive’ Get Rough Starts
CBS's recently canceled "Rules of Engagement" went out on a down note on Monday night, while the premiere of Fox's "The Goodwin Games" and a preview of ABC's "Motive" got both shows off to discouraging starts. Meanwhile, NBC took a win in the key demographic, despite "The Voice" hitting a series low for Monday night broadcasts, according to preliminary numbers.
NBC took first place in the advertiser-sought 18-49 demographic with a 2.9 rating/8 share and second in total viewers with 9 million. "The Voice" at 8 p.m. posted a 3.4/11 -- down 11 percent from last week, and the lowest-rated Monday night episode in the series' history, but still the night's best performance in the demo -- with 10.6 million total viewers. "Revolution" at 10 was even with last week for a 1.9/5 with 5.8 million total viewers.
ABC was second in ratings and first in total viewers with a 2.1/6 and 12.1 million. The performance finale of "Dancing With the Stars" at 8 posted a 2.5/7, a 25 percent jump from last week, but was down 14 percent from last spring's hour-long finale. It was the night's most-watched show with 14.7 million total viewers. A preview of the new series "Motive" at 10 had a not particularly encouraging 1.4/4 and took 6.8 million total viewers.
CBS was third in the demo and total viewers with a 1.9/5 and 7.5 million. Sandwiched between reruns -- "2 Broke Girls," "The Big Bang Theory" and "Mike & Molly" were all in repeat mode -- the finale of "Rules of Engagement" at 8:30 posted a 1.8/5, a 14 percent drop from both its last original two weeks ago and last year's finale. The "Rules" sendoff drew 6.2 million total viewers. The season finale of "Hawaii Five-0" at 10 climbed 11 percent for a 2.0/6 with 9 million total viewers.
Univision was fourth in total viewers with a 1.5/4 and 3.8 million.
Fox was fifth in ratings and total viewers with a 0.6/2 and 1.6 million total viewers. Stuck in a primetime lineup that was otherwise filled with repeats, the series premiere of the comedy "The Goodwin Games" at 8:30 drew a 0.7/2 and 1.7 million total viewers.
After Getting Booted From Apple’s App Store, Mobile Privacy App Clueful Returns On Android
Clueful, the mobile privacy app Apple booted from its App Store for being too revealing- or possibly because of its own behavior - is staging a comeback. This time around, Clueful’s maker Bitdefender is targeting Android users instead, with plans to reveal what the apps on your phone are doing, and how your privacy may be comprised in the process. Bitdefender, a company which makes a variety of anti-virus, anti-theft, and other security applications for web and mobile, first launched Clueful a year ago as a $4.00 iOS app that detailed how the apps on users’ phones handle – or mishandle, as the case may be – personal data. The app launched in the wake of a number of high-profile security events, like address book-gate and locationgate, for example. (And you know they’re bad when there’s a “gate” attached, right?). For “unknown reasons,” Apple removed Clueful from its App Store shortly after its debut. The company spins this as “we revealed too much!” of course, but the more informed answer points to the fact that, to work, the app itself had to pull a list of apps from a user’s device, send them to Clueful’s servers and then cross-reference those with the apps it had in its database. Apple might not have cared for this process, especially considering the end result may have discouraged app downloads. Clueful later returned in a watered down web version. Apple mobile device users, of course, don’t have much to fear in terms of malware because of how Apple tests and approves apps ahead of making them publicly accessible in its iTunes App Store. However, Clueful still plays on the sometimes misguided fears some have, who believe that software makers are always purposely and maliciously trying to track your location, acquire your personal or financial data, spam you or your friends with unwanted messages or emails, and more. Often, apps accused of doing some or all of these things, are more the result of a rush to launch or shoddy coding, more so than malicious intent. And sometimes, they’re just early stage startups, making mistakes. Then there’s the fact that some apps are designed to work with this “sensitive” data in ways that help you – an app that wants to help you find nearby events or set geo-fenced reminders, for instance, needs to know where you are. Yes, there are malicious, virus-laden apps as well as those over-reaching in terms
MoviePass Temporarily Removes Wait List, in Advance of Busy Memorial Day Weekend
MoviePass has temporarily removed its wait list and will allow customers to join its unlimited-movie-ticket plan without delay.
The Netflix-like service is still in its beta form, but has already generated buzz among cinephiles. Its waiting list numbers some 30,000 people, MoviePass CEO and co-founder Stacy Spikes told TheWrap.
Those people will have the option of joining the service without having to put up with a wait, but the offer expires at the end of the day Friday.
Also read: MoviePass Goes Netflix -- Can It Avoid Theater Owners' Anger This Time?
Spikes said it remains to be determined how many of the people on the waiting list will use the window to sign up.
The move comes as Hollywood gears up for Memorial Day, a holiday weekend that is among the biggest box-office events of the year for the movie business. This year, Memorial Day onces again promises to be a major weekend for the industry, with studios debuting such major films as "Fast & Furious 6," "Epic" and "The Hangover Part III."
To access MoviePass, users pay $25 to $40 a month, based on geography, for which they can see one 2D movie a day at 93 percent of theaters nationwide. The service does not include IMAX or 3D showings.
This is not the first time MoviePass has tried to establish itself as an essential tool for film fans. A previous test of the service in San Francisco came undone in 2011 when theaters refused to accept vouchers that MoviePass gave its customers.
Some exhibitors remain wary of the service but are taking a wait and see approach to its current iteration. Instead of vouchers, MoviePass now relies on debit cards issued by Discover and an iPhone or Android app.

GMA’s George Stephanopoulos Grills Yahoo, Tumblr CEOs on Past Failures
With all the buzz surrounding Yahoo's purchase of blogging/social media site Tumblr this week for an reported $1.1 billion, Good Morning America's George Stephanopoulos welcomed Yahoo and Tumblr CEOS Marissa Meyer and David Karp to the show Tuesday morning to discuss the acquisition. During the inteview, the anchor questioned them on Yahoo's past failures and asked how the two companies plan to join forces while also allowing Tumblr to maintain its identity.

Discussing the deal, Stephanopoulos said, "Yahoo has famously in the past made a lot of money for new sites and then it hasn't worked out. What's your plan to avoid that kind of failure this time?"
Yahoo's Meyer, 37, responded by saying that Tumblr is all about its community of users and creators and that Yahoo plans to stay true to that mission. "I think one of the things that's so special about Tumblr is the community of users, this community of creators, and we want to make sure that they recognize that Tumblr is going to be independent, it's going to have the product roadmap and vision its always had. We're going to stay true to that user promise and we're setting up Tumblr to do exactly that," she explained.

When Stephanopoulos grilled Karp on his past comments that "the whole idea of advertising turns {his} stomach," the 26-year-old CEO explained that it's about going after the right kind of advertisers. "More specifically, we've always said that the state of advertising on the web has just always been kind of uninspiring to us. But the truth is that there's a lot of great advertising out there in the world and the thesis for our business was that that was the type of advertising we could inspire and enable on Tumblr," Karp said, adding that Yahoo as the original digital media company is "the perfect partner to help us do that."
And when Stephanopoulos replied, "And you're the original hipster CEO," Karp looked upset. "I don't appreciate that one," he said, prompting an apology from Stephanopoulos at the end of the segment.

Tim Cook: “We Pay All Of The Taxes We Owe, Every Single Dollar”
We are updating this blog during the live congressional testimony of Apple CEO Tim Cook. More details will be added soon.
Apple's CEO Tim Cook came out firing during his Congressional grilling, declaring, "we pay all of the taxes we owe, every single dollar". A blistering senate investigation accused Apple of shady tax dodging, helping it avoid $13.8 billion in taxes.
RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Up Strong, ‘Voice’ Hits Low, ‘Hawaii Five-O’ Finale Down, ‘Motive’ Debuts Soft
Monday saw a mix of live, encores, finales, premieres and prayers for those in the path of the tornado in Oklahoma in the primetime schedule. Over on ABC, the last performance show of Dancing With The Stars (2.5/7) before tonight’s results season 16 finale saw the final four couples strut their stuff once last time. DWTS certainly flexed some muscle as the show was up 25% from its series performance low tie of May 13. The most watched show of the night with 14.73 million viewers, the two-hour show was down 14% from its one-hour May 21, 2012 performance finale and dipped 7% from its last performance show of last season on November 26, 2012. Though the show was up from last week, for a bit last night it looked like the total votes might be down. Online “technical difficulties” saw voting on ABC’s website temporarily suspended leaving viewers the chance to cast their ballots via text, Facebook and phone. The online voting was restored before the show was over and viewers were encouraged to hit the website to decided who gets the Mirrorball trophy this year. Imported from Canada for the summer, crime procedural Motive (1.4/4) did not benefit from its lead-in. The new show was down sharply from the 2.2/6 of Castle’s season finale last week and down 30% from Scandal’s April 5, 2012 debut. ABC won the night in ... Read More »
Obama on Oklahoma Tornado: Country Will Be ‘There for Them’
President Barack Obama pledged the government's full support to help Oklahoma recover from the tornado that has flattened communities and left dozens of people injured or dead.
"Oklahoma needs to get everything that it needs right away," Obama said during a White House news conference Tuesday. "Their country will remain on the ground, there for them, beside them for as long as it takes."
The massive twister cut a deadly path through Oklahoma on Monday, killing at least 51 people and destroying homes, schools and businesses. Whole neighborhoods are unrecognizable.
Obama noted that there were now "empty spaces" where once there were living rooms, and said that Oklahoma must dig itself out of the wreckage and "refill those spaces with love and laughter and community."
To help with that recovery, the president declared a major disaster in Oklahoma on Monday, ordering federal aid and dispatching members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to the state.
In a reference to the seven children who were found drowned at Plaza Towers Elementary School, Obama praised teachers "who gave their all" to help kids.
The president said the victims remain in the country's prayers, but pledged to "back up those prayers with deeds for as long as it takes."

"With the world's obsession on all-things gossip, it's important that we bring something very different to 'The Gossip Table,'" said Farley. "Rob, Marianne, Noah, Chloe and Delaina are the best in the business, and I'm confident that viewers are going to love to hear breaking stories each and every day from them."
Twitter’s Innovator’s Patent Agreement Goes Into Action For ‘Pull To Refresh,’ Jelly And Lift Will Adopt The Framework
Last year, Twitter announced something it called the Innovator's Patent Agreement (IPA), which would keep patents in the hands of the designers and engineers that came up with the technology behind them. What this agreement serves as is a promise to only act on a patent for "defensive purposes." Anything outside of that scope would need to be signed off on the creator of the patent itself.
‘Behind the Candelabra’ Review: Sex, Lies & the Closet
Michael Douglas hits a career high with Steven Soderbergh's masterful "Behind the Candelabra," the love story about Liberace and Scott Thorson slated for an HBO debut on Sunday.
One of the best films to play in Cannes so far, it's really about the lengths gay men had to go in decades past to have a relationship that equaled marriage and the difficulty for an icon like Liberace to even admit he was gay at all..
Soderbergh has made his best film in years, an honest rendering of a passionate, sometimes silly love affair between Liberace and the much younger Scott Thorson.
Plucked from obscurity when he was just 18, Thorson was immediately attractive to Liberace, and it wasn't long before Liberace wanted him to move in and do whatever odd jobs were available -- take care of his animals, for instance. What drew Scott into his world wasn't so much the lure of money but the lure of love and family.
It would be easy to make this film a parody -- let's laugh at the funny, swishy gay men. But Soderbergh, Douglas and Damon never slip into stereotypes. Sure, some of the things that happen on screen are funny: the clothes, the hair, the costumes, the cars, the dogs, the plastic surgery, the barely-clothed houseboy delivering Liberace food. This is life in the gaudy, glamorous extreme.
But the movie is good because it is authentic. Were it presented as one big joke, or as a vulgar character assassination of Liberace, it wouldn't be effective, nor as moving as it ultimately is.
Much of that authenticity can be credited to the two leads – Douglas specifically, but Damon, too. Somehow, even dressed in outfits that can only be called costumes, neither actor ever loses the sense of who they really are. Liberace, as it turns out, was a pretty nice guy. Much of what drew Scott to Liberace was that kindness.
Soderbergh initially had the idea to put Douglas in the role of Liberace when the two worked together on "Traffic." But it wasn't until the director read Thorson's book "Behind the Candelabra: My Life With Liberace" that it all clicked for the director, who won the Palme d'Or with his first movie, "sex, lies and videotape," in 1989.
At some point watching the film, you forget you're watching Michael Douglas at all. His voice, expressions, body language, movements -- he entirely disappears. He speaks warmly, through a tight smile, and offers himself up without vanity. Flabby, aging, balding (Douglas really isn't) -- Soderbergh doesn't shy away from unflattering angles, and Douglas doesn't flinch.
The film also makes fun of the plastic-surgery generation that believes the tighter you pull the skin the better you look. In Liberace's world, in Vegas and Palm Springs, that's the norm. In one spectacular cameo, Rob Lowe shows up as a plastic surgeon with his own tight face.
Damon is perfectly cast as Thorson, and is in his element as an actor playing characters like this: Tom Ripley in "The Talented Mr. Ripley," Marc Whitacre in "The Informant."
Thorson isn't quite as quirky as those two characters -- he's more honest, for one thing. He's not deceptive in the slightest, but there is an obtuseness to him. The two actors are so naturally affectionate and sexual with each other that they create a relationship that feels genuine.
The film will be released on HBO, since it was turned down for studio financing and distribution. That a movie as rich as "Behind the Candelabra" has been relegated to the small screen is one of the reasons Hollywood is slowly killing itself.

Personal Profile Page Startup About.me Is Ready To Take Your Money With New Premium Service, Plans For Wefollow Integration
About.me, the online identity platform that spun out from Aol* at the beginning of the year before acquiring the one-time Digg spinout Wefollow, is now lifting the curtains on its plans to generate revenue, with today’s debut of About.me Premium. Via this new, paid tier to the service, the company is adding some of the more advanced features users have requested, including domain mapping, Google Analytics integration, the ability to remove the About.me branding, and more, for a $4 per month fee. And that’s just to start. This is the first time About.me has charged users for any aspect of its service, co-founder Ryan Freitas tells us. With today’s release, the site will begin to offer features aimed at professional users, like the ability to display their About.me page on their own custom domain name – the most in-demand user request to date, he says. The site will walk users through the process of adjusting their DNS settings to map the new domain to their page. To accompany this change, Premium users can also remove the branding on their page, which includes the “about.me” logo and the top navigation bar entirely. However, branding won’t entirely disappear. A small button at the bottom will still say “me,” pointing those who are interested to more details about the About.me service. Users will also be able to check site statistics using Google Analytics, and jump to the front of support queues with priority email support. The company isn’t yet committing to a guaranteed turn-around time, however, because they’re currently unsure what user support volume will be. But Freitas says the company has always taken support seriously, and is now staffing up on the customer service side of the business. The company also announced its future plans with Premium, which speaks to how it will integrate the technology acquired by the purchase of Wefollow, which today still serves as a discovery tool that helps Twitter users find others to follow by interest. “There will be a secondary tier that allows for people who want to be discovered,” explains Freitas. “We’re going to be able to create a paid tier using the algorithms from Wefollow to promote [users] into a variety of different mechanisms that we’ll be unveiling over the next few months,” he says. This will include a search directory, similar to the one Wefollow offers today, as well as tools that will allow premium users to pay for
George Michael Fell Out Of A Moving Range Rover On The Motorway
The Sun's headline for this story is: "Scrape me up before you go slow." I don't know whether to laugh, cry, slow clap or slap The Sun. Not today, The Sun, not today!
Last week, the original George Michael was airlifted to a hospital in London after he got into a car accident on the M1. George was treated for cuts and bruises and released. George wasn't driving and at the time and nobody knew what happened until now. Katherine Fox tells The Sun that she saw George Michael fall out of the passenger side of a silver Range Rover that was going 70mph on the motorway. (insert your WHAM! jokes here) Katherine, who busted out an "I am concerned, but also sexy" face while posing next to her Mini Cooper for The Sun, said George fell out and bounced along the motorway. Katherine ran to George and says his clothes were ripped, his shoes were off and he had a huge cut on his forehead. Katherine went on to say:
“I asked what had gone on and was told he tried to open the car door and shut it again because it wasn’t shut properly and apparently fell out at 70mph. I was on the phone to the ambulance and said, ‘You’d better come quick. This doesn’t look good’. George was wearing a black and gold Adidas tracksuit that was ripped all down the arm and shoulder. He had no trainers on. I grabbed one from the second lane because cars were swerving to avoid it. His sunglasses were also in the road. I could hear the crunch as cars drove over them.
George didn’t say anything, he just seemed in shock. He was sitting down against a car and in the arms of his friend. The guy holding him was quite scared. He kept saying to George, ‘Are you all right mate?’ I think George was lucky he didn’t die. If he’d landed in the second lane he would have been hit by a car without a doubt. He was in the middle of the M1. I could have run him over.”
George's boyfriend Fadi Fawaz, who wasn't in the car, told The Sun that he's resting at home and is doing good.
So many damn questions. Why wasn't George wearing a seat belt? Was this a hook-up gone terribly, terribly wrong? Was Gucci Mane driving the car? I was going to ask who tries to open and shut the door on the freeway, but then I realized that the answer is obviously George Michael. Oh, George Michael. When he drives a car, bad things happens and when he just sits in a car, bad things happen. Maybe he should just take the bus from now on.
