The company’s U.S. stock closed +9.3% today — at $22.91, the highest it’s been since late 2011 — in unusually heavy trading after Japan’s Nikkei news service reported that Sony’s board will explore the proposal from billionaire Daniel Loeb’s Third Point. Sony was noncommittal last week when the hedge fund disclosed that it had paid $1.1B for a 6.4% stake in the electronics giant, and wanted it to create a separate stock for the movie, television, and music production and distribution operations. Loeb proposed that Sony sell as much as 20% of the entertainment unit, and use the cash to shore up the core electronics businesses. Sony shares have appreciated about 16% since then. (Third Point partnered with Deadline’s parent Penske Media Corp in its acquisition last year of Variety.)
New Falling Skies showrunner David Eick has started to put together a strong writing staff for the hit TNT drama’s fourth season. Veteran showrunner Carol Barbee has joined the alien-invasion series as a consulting producer. She recently worked with Eick on Fox’s Touch where she was an executive producer and he was a consulting producer. Season 3 of Falling Skies, executive produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Noah Wyle, kicks off with a two-hour premiere June 9. It is yet to be renewed for a fourth season though that is considered a formality as Falling Skies is TNT’s #1 scripted series in the younger demos. WME-repped Barbee previously served as executive producer/showrunner on cult CBS drama Jericho which, similarly to Falling Skies, was set in a post-apocalyptic world.

CMT has ordered 11 more episodes of bounty hungers "Dog," Beth and Leland Chapman's new series bringing its Season 1 order to 22 episodes. Production on the back 11 episodes will begin immediately.
"We knew Dog and Beth would shake up the programming landscape at CMT and they've done just that, more than doubling our quarter-to-date prime average," said CMT's executive vice president Jayson Dinsmore in a statement on Tuesday.

Produced by Electus, "Dog and Beth" has become the cable channel's top rated series in its first five weeks of airing. It is also performing well on Video On Demand and social media.
"In addition to ratings success, the show has seen the largest level of social media engagement of any previous CMT series, with an incredibly dedicated, impassioned fan base. Dog, Beth, Leland and Electus are fantastic to work with, and we look forward to getting them back on the road to continue the hunt," Dinsmore added.
A&E canceled the family's previous series, "Dog the Bounty Hunter," last April after eight seasons.
Melissa McCarthy allegedly booted a female extra from the set of her directorial debut "Tammy" on Monday after catching the woman mistreating, and possibly even abusing, her child.
TMZ reports the unidentified woman reported to work on the Wilmington, N.C., set with a 4 to 5 year-old child in tow and struggled to control the child's behavior.
McCarthy's reps did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment.

Witnesses said the young mother was frequently verbally reprimanding her disruptive child, but then went a step too far in McCarthy's eyes by strongly jerking the child up in the air by the wrist.
According to TMZ, McCarthy witnessed the incident and immediately ordered production assistants to remove the woman and child from set.
The "Heat" actress co-wrote and is co-directing "Tammy" with her husband, Ben Falcone. Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are producing under Gary Sanchez Productions.
McCarthy also stars as the titular character who loses her job and learns her husband is unfaithful, so she hits the road with her profane, hard-drinking grandmother.
The freewheeling head of FilmOn has to stop using names including Aereokiller and BarryDriller.com for his broadcast streaming service according a settlement overseen by U.S. District Court Judge Audrey Collins. The decision appears to end three lawsuits: Last year IAC chief Barry Diller — a major investor in Aereo — sued David for creating a site called BarryDriller.com. In February, David returned fire, suing Aereo for trademark infringement after he bought the naming rights to a product called Aero. And in March, Aereo sued David for creating a site called Aero.tv. Like Aereo, FilmOn streams programming taken from over-the-air signals — and has also incurred the wrath of broadcasters who say that it violates their copyrights. A New York court has allowed Aereo to expand while it weighs the broadcasters’ challenge. But in December a California court granted a temporary injunction that applies locally against David’s service. Even so, he says that with the trademark settlements FilmOn now “can continue rolling out our service nationwide. We are currently in 45 markets compared to Aereo’s two.” He adds in a statement: “So eat s*it Barry.”
When Shia LaDouche signed up for Lars Von Trier's Nymphomanic, he said that the scenes were going to be so graphic that you'd be able to see the fleas from his ass hairs jump up and down as he had missionary-style sex with his co-star. Shia insinuated that he was making fancy art house porn, but then Lars Von Trier later said that he was planning to use body doubles and special effects to make it look like the actors (including Shia, Charlotte Gainsburg, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Jamie Bell, Stellan Skarsgård, Connie Nielsen and Christian Slater) had actual sex with each other.
Well, The Hollywood Reporter says that Lars is CGI'ing the dicks and chochas of body doubles onto the actors. Lars shot the actors having fake movie sex and also shot the body doubles having real sex. He's going to cut and paste the bottom part of the body doubles onto the bottom part of the actors. The movie's producer explained it like this:
"We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post we will digital-impose the two. So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles.”
Nymphomaniac was supposed to make its debut at Cannes, but because of all the work it takes to copy and paste a body double's dick onto Shia's crotch, they didn't make the deadline. It will premiere on Christmas Day (Merry Christmas!) in Copenhagen.
I totally understand why Lars didn't let Shia have actual sex. If he did, the entire movie would've been shut down by the health department. Since Lars is a slave to the details, I'm sure he hired exact body doubles of the actors. So I'm guessing that Shia's body double is a mouse. I mean, we've all seen it in that Sigur Rós video.
The Season 1 finale of Bates Motel last night on A&E got 2.7 million viewers with 1.5 million among adults 18-49 and 1.4 million among adults 25-54. That’s up 15% in the 18-49 demo from last week’s show and up 8% in total viewers and among Adults 25-54. The finale was down from the show’s March 18 premiere that was the most-watched original drama in the demos in A&E’s history. The debut of the Psycho prequel garnered 3 million total viewers and 1.599 million viewers among adults 18-49 and 1.633 million viewers among adults 25-54. Those numbers made it a no-brainer that A&E announced on April 8 that it had renewed Bates Motel for a 10-episode second season to air in 2014. Overall, Bates Motel averaged 2.7 million viewers in its first season with 1.5 million in both the 18-49 and 25-54 demos. Those results are the best any A&E drama has performed in the demos. The numbers place Bates Motel as the No. 2 top new cable drama of the season behind History’s Vikings.

The series, whose first season ran for 10-espisodes, details the dark backstory of Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and how deeply intricate his relationship is with his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga). Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) executive produce.
Ricky Gervais' "Derek," a new Netflix series from the creator and star of "The Office" and 'Extras," will premiere on Netflix Sept. 12. Netflix will release all seven episodes at once, the same approach it has taken with its latest original series "House of Cards" and "Hemlock Grove."

Gervais wrote and directed the show, which he also stars in as the title character. Derek is a a sweet, selfless but meek man who works in a retirement home alongside Dougie (Karl Pilkington) and Hannah (Kerry Godliman). The show will be available in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Latin America, Brazil and the Nordics.
It will not be available in the U.K., where the show already premiered on Channel 4 and will return for a second season.

"Ricky Gervais is one of the most distinctive comedy voices of his generation," Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix, said in a statement. "With 'Derek,' Ricky takes on new territory and mixes comedy with drama that is sometimes touching and sometimes heartbreaking."
Neflix's next splashy original title is its reboot of "Arrested Development," which debuts May 26.

The $215 million production is said to be one of the summer movie season's wild card, given the titular hero's better known competition like Superman, Iron Man and X-Men character, Wolverine. If the movie from "Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski comes loaded with more high-octane action like this, however, Depp's star power shouldn't be the only draw for audiences.
